Treating Oral and Maxillofacial Trauma
In many instances, facial trauma is entirely accidental, and therefore unpredictable. Falls, sports injuries, work-related accidents, and other similar incidences cause many oral and facial injuries. After careful evaluation of your injury and medical history, your oral surgeon will determine the right treatment for you.
Some facial injuries include
- Facial cuts. Your oral surgeon will assess the severity of the cut and look for damage to nerves and glands. The wound is usually closed using sutures or stitches. Your oral surgeon will determine the treatment necessary to minimize scarring.
- Bone injuries/fractures. Tiny biocompatible screws and plates are usually used to secure facial bones in place and stabilize the area. Removal is usually not necessary because these materials are meant to bond with your natural bone.
- Dental injuries. If you have a tooth or several teeth that have been knocked out or severely damaged, come to our office as soon as possible. Do not clean the tooth and, if possible, put the tooth in saliva or a container of whole milk and bring it with you to our office. Our chances of saving your tooth are much better the sooner you come into our office.
Call as soon as you or a family member experiences a facial injury. Usually, we will see you the same day that you call. If your injuries are severe, seek emergency treatment immediately. The doctors of Fresno Oral Maxillofacial Surgery & Dental Implant Center have hospital privileges at Community Regional Medical Center, Clovis Community Hospital, St. Agnes Hospital, Children’s Hospital Central California, Kaiser Permanente – Fresno, and Veteran’s Affairs Hospital – Fresno.
