How Do Dental Implants Work?
A significant advantage of dental implants is that they function just like a natural tooth. The implant, which is a post composed of medical-grade titanium, is surgically placed beneath the gum tissue and into your jaw bone. The dental implant fuses with your natural bone over time, which creates a sturdy foundation for your replacement teeth. The abutment piece affixes to the implant post and supports the custom-designed crown. The results are beautiful, natural, secure, and best of all, permanent.
Dental implants are incredibly versatile and can replace a single tooth, several teeth, or both arches of teeth, as well as protect your oral health. Watch the video to learn more!
The Benefits of Dental Implants
Permanence.
The implant post fuses to the jaw bone, creating a sturdy foundation that allows you to eat the foods you love without any moving parts. With proper care, your dental implant can last a lifetime.
Prevent Bone Loss.
Dental implants are the only restoration solution that protects the jaw bone by providing stimulation, similar to a natural tooth’s root. This prevents bone loss and keeps your jaw healthy.
Natural Results.
The crown is custom-made to blend in with your other teeth because the post is embedded into the jaw, your implant will look, feel, and function just like a natural, healthy tooth.

Dr. Chien, Dr. Kheradpir, Dr. Barnhart, Dr. Huh, Dr. Curiel, and Dr. Salim will help determine the right type of implant for your restorative needs. Fresno Oral Maxillofacial Surgery & Dental Implant Center offers many types of dental implant procedures.
- Single Tooth Replacement. One dental implant can replace one missing tooth, including the root and crown. This can be performed as needed throughout your mouth.
- Immediate Implants. Same-day dental implants are inserted into the empty socket immediately following a tooth extraction, reducing the numbers of visits needed to restore the tooth.
- Implant-Supported Bridges. Your healthy teeth that are adjacent to a gap must be reshaped to hold a traditional bridge. Instead, dental implants can support the prosthesis and protect your natural teeth.
- Full-Arch Restoration. Ideal for patients in need of a smile makeover, this treatment secures a fixed denture using dental implants in one or both dental arches.

Dental Implant Surgery
Based on your individual needs and circumstances, the dental implant process can vary. However, it usually requires three or more office visits: one consultation appointment, one surgery appointment, and a couple of follow-up appointments. If you need bone grafting, tooth extractions, or want immediate implants, you may have more or fewer appointments.
At your consultation, your oral surgeon will evaluate your condition and examine your medical and dental history before determining your treatment plan. 3D scans will be taken at this time to review your specific facial anatomy and develop your custom treatment plan. These scans can also assist in the creation of custom 3D surgical guides. If you have any questions about your dental implant procedure, your consultation is a perfect time to ask. Your oral surgeon will address all of your questions and will help you to feel comfortable and informed about your upcoming procedure.
Your next appointment will be the day of the surgery, which is when you will receive your dental implants. After administering the agreed-upon anesthesia, your oral surgeon will place the dental implant post into the bone. Dissolvable sutures will be placed, as needed and you will rest until the anesthesia wears off. Then, you are ready to go home. We may provide you with a temporary crown to wear. Once your surgical sites have healed, your restorative dentist will place the new crown, which is custom-designed to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.
Dental Implants: Their Cost and Value
Your dental implant cost will vary depending on a number of factors, including how many teeth you need replaced, the type of implant and anesthesia, your insurance, and if you require additional procedures. Our staff will provide you with a cost estimate during your first visit so you know exactly what to expect.
Some patients choose removable bridges or dentures because they are cheaper in the beginning. These options do not prevent the jaw bone from deteriorating, and removable oral appliances should be replaced every few years. Without support, the jaw bone can break down so much that your facial features begin to sag, teeth shift out of place, and you require more costly bone repair surgery.
Dental implants have a high success rate and require the same care as natural teeth. Simply brush and floss regularly, and your implant can last a lifetime. There are no moving parts that cause sores or need to be removed during meals. Your implant becomes a long-term addition to your smile and is there to stay, bringing the confidence in your smile you deserve.
Types of Anesthesia
Our surgeons offer many options for anesthesia and sedation to ensure your comfort during treatment.

Reviews From Our Dental Implant Patients
"The atmosphere here is very professional. The staff here are very courteous and go out of their way to make sure that you’re comfortable. The doctors here walked me through the process and made me feel like everything was going to be OK, and that really put my mind at ease. The procedure went very smoothly. The recovery time was faster than I expected. The doctors called in and checked on me, and they even sent me an orchid after the procedure was done. After having this dental implant, it feels great to have an amazing smile. I am absolutely happy I had my procedure done here at Fresno Oral Surgery."
"I was actually referred here from another local dentist. I need a couple of implants and to do that, they have to do what’s called a sinus lift. They have to do surgery to do that. Met the staff and they were real friendly — got me right in, did the surgery. The recovery process went very well. The staff was excellent — everybody, very friendly. It was very down-to-earth as far as talking about what the surgery was, what it entailed. Great experience. So I always appreciate when somebody does a good job, and I always take the time to call them and tell them they did. So five stars — great job."
"I had had a root canal and a crown, and the tooth failed that the crown was on. And so I had to do something, and I knew that I did not want to have a bridge, and so I elected to have a dental implant, and Dr. Barnhart did it for me. One of the wonderful things about Dr. Barnhart and her staff is everything is explained, and everything is very calm. The first thing that had to happen is I had to have the tooth extracted — that was step number one. Well, she did a bone graft after the tooth was pulled because I do have osteoporosis. It was very gentle and very well done. Dr. Barnhart was very nice, very kind, and fun to talk to. I would absolutely recommend Fresno Oral Surgery to all my friends in Fresno and Tulare, CA."
"I told so many people when I left here how impressed I was with everything from the front desk to the doctor and his assistants. They were excited to be here; they made you feel comfortable. The doctor and the staff are very professional. They are efficient, got right to what they had to do, and got you in and out. I look forward to completing the process and having an amazing smile. I am so happy that I chose Fresno Oral Surgery to have my surgery done. It was really a nice place to come to."

They were very welcoming, and I felt very comfortable, and I really loved everybody here. Dr. Chien was very amazing. He was very excellent, very professional, very sympathetic. I felt very comfortable with the procedure. The surgery was awesome. My recovery was fast, and I was able to eat within the next day. I recommend anyone to come here so that way the doctors here can put a smile on your face too."
Frequently Asked Questions
Does food get under dental implants?
Food can become stuck around the crown of your dental implant, just like any other tooth. Maintain good oral hygiene to keep your teeth clean and clear of debris.
What happens if you don’t have enough bone for dental implants?
Tooth loss, disease, injury, and birth defects can cause a weakened jaw bone. When there is not enough bone to support an implant, our oral surgeons place a bone graft in the area where it is needed. Your jaw will heal over the graft, resulting in new, sturdy bone. Once healed, there will be adequate bone to support dental implants.
Who is not a good candidate for dental implants?
If you have a suppressed immune system, cancer, or severe bone deterioration, you may not be suitable for dental implants. To find out your oral surgery treatment options, contact Fresno Oral Maxillofacial Surgery & Dental Implant Center to schedule an appointment.
Can I get a dental implant years after an extraction?
You can receive a dental implant the same day as a tooth extraction or many years later. There is no time or age limit for dental implants. As long as there is enough bone to support it, you can receive a dental implant anywhere you’re missing a tooth.
